Water Action Volunteers in the field

Stream Monitoring Training
Educational Material Handouts

There are a number of educational materials that are available to you to provide to your volunteers at training events. These include the monitoring fact and data sheets as well as materials designed to help your volunteers better understand (or refresh memory about) the methods, to share information about the program with others, and to have on hand as resources for monitoring. It's recommended you provide the following materials to your participants at trainings:

Educational Materials Useful for Trainings

Stream Monitoring DVDs (you can opt to either include 1 with each set of equipment or provide each volunteer a copy of the DVD, though please ask them to return their copy if they quit so we can share it with someone else)

Wonderful Wacky Water Critters (includes Key to Life in the River)

Macroinvertebrate Wildcards (19 different wildcards are available that each include a photo and description of a macroinvertebrate that may be found at a stream site)

Biotic Index posters (1 per training please, these are intended as training aids to be used during training by the instructor)

Hoosier RiverWatch macroinvertebrate posters (New for 2009 these posters show various macroinvertebrates of the stream in their habitat; please order just 1 per training to be used as an aid while teaching)

Stream monitoring "pocket" brochures that explain the program if passers-by are interested in learning what citizens are doing while monitoring (Feel free to order multiple copy per volunteer or per equipment kit you will be putting together)

Stream monitoring program three level fact sheets (These describe how the program is set up and "where" new volunteers can plan to go after participating in Level 1)
