Level 2

About this Community Outreach Project

Dr. Bret Shaw, assistant professor in the Life Sciences Communications Department at UW-Madison, was intrigued by volunteer monitoring and how to best communicate monitoring results in local communities when he started his faculty position in 2007. Soon after, he partnered with the Citizen-based Stream Monitoring Program to discover how citizens prefer to receive information and identify what motivates volunteers to participate in monitoring. Level 2 stream monitors were surveyed and their responses were used to craft a communications strategy to increase the visibility and impact of the Level 2 Citizen-based Stream Monitoring Program.

In 2008, Bret and graduate student Elizabeth Goers worked with Stream Monitoring Program staff (Chris Clayton and Kris Stepenuck) to help share results of your efforts within your communities. Elizabeth wrote a series of news articles about the work of volunteers in different corners of the state. We also teamed up with Don Stanley's Life Sciences Communications class and the UW-Extension Environmental Resources Center Publications Unit to develop and print a brochure about stream monitoring that can be shared with interested citizens in local communities across the state.

This Community Outreach web portal was developed to provide citizens with tips and tools to help share stream monitoring initiatives and results locally, as well as to build support for local efforts, and local knowledge about stream ecosystems. River Alliance Local Groups Coordinator, Allison Werner, assisted with development of the site, sharing knowledge and resources to help make it as effective as possible for the citizens.

Just about every section of this website provides citizens with specific steps to follow or tips to consider to conduct better community outreach. Where able, we have provided citizens with guidelines, presentations, and resource information to make community outreach efforts as easy as possible. Use links at the top right to access information about specific community outreach information.
