Marsh and Water Quality Monitoring Program Participant Duties

Volunteer Participant Responsibilities

  • Attend the training session at UW-Superior (in April 2009) to become familiar with procedures, equipment and forms
  • Supply your own hip boots or chest waders for water quality and macroinvertebrate sampling
  • Complete one marsh site visit between April and July for 3-4 hours to conduct macroinvertebrate and water quality monitoring
  • Deliver water samples to a local shipping company
  • Complete an amphibian survey: 3 visits (nights) between April and July (30-90 minutes per visit)
  • Complete a marsh bird survey: 2 visits between May 20 and July 5 in early morning or early evening hours (1-2 hours per visit. This survey is for those with strong bird identification skills
  • Submit data to Bird Studies Canada in a timely fashion
  • Report problems and questions to Sue O'Halloran
  • Maintain & return equipment in good condition

Qualifications

  • No science background is needed, training will be provided for those who are interested and able to meet the defined responsibilities
  • Ability to walk on unstable, mucky/wet ground and enter the water to access a monitoring site (for water quality and macroinvertebrate sampling)
  • Enjoyment of the outdoors and concern for the environment
