
Marsh and Water Quality Monitoring Program
The purpose of this volunteer based project is to train citizens to monitor amphibians (frogs & toads), marsh birds, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and water quality in marshes in the Superior, WI area. The information gathered through this project is shared with Bird Studies Canada's Marsh Monitoring Program to help assess the long term and current health of marshes within the St. Louis River watershed and to plan for future remediation efforts.
Who
Interested citizen volunteers go through a two-day training at UW-Superior (to be scheduled for April 2009) during which they learn water quality and aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling techniques, and monitoring protocols for amphibians and marsh bird surveys. No previous experience is necessary to conduct water quality and macroinvertebrate sampling or amphibian monitoring, however strong bird identification skills are required to conduct a marsh bird surveys.
Where
Marsh monitoring will be conducted in Superior area marshes during spring and summer 2009.
When
A training will be held at UW-Superior and a field location April 18 and 19, 2009. Monitoring will be conducted between April and July 2009.
