Carpenter Creek 303 (d) Impaired Waters Monitoring Project
The Central Wisconsin Chapter of Trout Unlimited began monitoring Carpenter Creek in 2007. They are partnering with the Waushara Land Conservation Department and the Department of Natural Resources to conduct the monitoring. The creek is currently listed on the state’s impaired waters list (sometimes called a “303(d) list” after the section of the Clean Water Act which mandates states regularly provide the Environmental Protection Agency with lists of water impaired by a variety of pollutants). The group hopes to document recent conservation efforts in an attempt to have Carpenter Creek removed from this list. Monthly testing will include TSS, phosphorus and flow monitoring in addition to regular level 2 stream monitoring parameters. They also collect macroinvertebrate samples. They will send a sample to UW-Stevens Point Aquatic Entomology Lab and will also identify samples to family level and compare results. They received WDNR Partnership Program funding to conduct the project and work with UW-Stevens Point Center for Watershed Education for lab analyses.
