
Information For Volunteers
- Contact Laura Herman or Kris Stepenuck to schedule a training in your area
- Crayfish should be collected during the warmest months of the year when they are most active. They can be collected in June, but most people will collect them in July, August, and September. All crayfish should be collected by September 30, 2008.
- Crayfish should be turned in to local contacts no later than October 5, 2008.
- Trainings will be provided upon request by Kris Stepenuck. These take 3 hours and are held in a location convenient to the volunteer group requesting the training. Methods for collecting crayfish (460 kb pdf) and monitoring other water quality parameters will be covered.
- Equipment is available at Beaver Creek Reserve, Riveredge Nature Center, Urban Ecology Center, Friends of Milwaukee’s Rivers, Welty Environmental Center, Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department (UW-Extension Basin Educator), and through the Water Action Volunteers Coordinator.

- There are two data sheets used by volunteers accessible to be printed from this site. One of the data sheets (pdf 11 kb) is completed and placed in the Whirlpak bags with preserved crayfish. It is used to identify the sampling date, location and bag number . The other identifies all other site and water quality information: Crayfish Data Collection (pdf 54 kb). Both must be completed and turned in at drop off locations or the sample will not be used in the research.
