April 15: Ephemeral Wetlands: Where Spring Can Make You Dizzy
Riveredge Speaks Out
Tuesday, April 15, 7 – 8:30 pm
Talk about a great fluctuation in the force! Spring in ephemeral wetlands starts before the ice thaws, and by the time wading is easy, they teem with life specifically adapted to the wetland’s short-term lifespan – wet in spring, dry by autumn. The organisms that live in ephemeral wetlands know how to make hay while the sun shines. They breed fast, eat fast, grow fast, live fast, then rest or move on. Join wetland ecologist Mary Linton for a of tour ephemeral wetlands from Spring to pond drying. She’ll pay special attention to the organisms that thrive in this often harsh environment. Discover how ephemeral wetlands are critical for prairies, forest birds and mammals, your garden, and even the success of your summer vacation up north. Don’t be surprised if some poetry sneaks in along the way. Riveredge Speaks Out is help at the Pieper Power Education Center, 8200 County Line Road, Mequon, 53097. Open to the public.
