Mayfly Watch

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Phenology Network sponsor Mayfly Watch. In this program, volunteers are asked to keep an eye out for hatches of mayflies along the Mississippi River during summer months. Millions of mayflies often emerge from their juvenile stages in the river and its tributaries all at once, sometimes even registering on local weather radar! These aquatic insects are important food for many fish. The US Fish & Wildlife Service is interested in tracking the timing of seasonal events like these.
